Paychecks for most Washington workers are smaller this month thanks to the new long-term care payroll tax. Now, state Senate Republicans want to give you a chance to get out of it. Senate Republicans are introducing legislation to allow workers to opt out of the mandatory long-term care tax with no need for proof of other coverage. Rebates would be offered for people now being forced to pay the tax. The tax is $58 annually for every $10,000 in pay – that means someone making $50,000 will pay $290 a year. The WA Cares program offers a maximum lifetime payout of $36,500, a fraction of the typical cost of long-term care and you can’t use it if you move out of state.
